 What You Need to Know
« Thread Started on Aug 22, 2006, 12:04am »

Well, this is it, you're one-stop introduction page!

First of all, welcome to the Knighthood. We here hope you will enjoy this tour and see fit to stay and join us in our collaboration.

"What do you do here?" might be your first question. Let me explain...

Through socialization, communication, and posts on the forum, we collaborate and discuss/debate ideas for our characters in the stories, then we write them (either separately, alternately, or together...ly) and post them in a nicely-paced fashion in the thread designated for the story posting.

It's custom that there will be only One thread open per story... there's no rhyme or reason to how we will devide the story threads... by "Acts" or "Chapters" but whenever we get to a point that one section of the story seems to end, we close one thread and open another. Often, this coincides with having around seven pages of writing per Chapter, but this is hardly a rule.

Don't be surprised, due to on-the-go planning and pacing, and/or unforeseen events, if once a story is completed, it is given a quick twice-over and reshuffled (with possible edits... however the likelihood of that is hopefully dismal for the future) into something easier to read, and better balanced - the goal for this post-production of sorts, is to make the best story possible. No edits will be made without your permission if it deals with any of your characters... unless you've been excommunicated.

What else? Well, making a character and where to use this character are two important notions. As for where, right now we're offering several open stories to join and use your new character(s):

Heart's Rebirth
A continuation of the story setup in Heart's Destiny. This is a fantasy-setting story, where the overlapping plot concerns a semi-vampiric invasion of the western half of the mostly-human nation of Bildesh. This invasion has narrowed itself down to one final major city, Delrean, which is become Bildesh's last stand, so to speak. Help defend the city from this full-scale siege... or separate yourself from the main story and tell your own tale in this world. The possibilities are truly, endless.

War Games
This is a story set hundreds, even thousands of years into the future of the established world. In a world without gods, two extraordinary, daresay, "godlike" beings, play a game of chess to close a wager on whether magic or technology is the true driving force of the future. For the rest of the world, this means there are two main nation-types in the immediate world... Machinia, the technologically-advanced continent-nation to the east, and Maga, the conglomeration of varying magic-dependent groups that fight in rebellion. They now wage ful-scale war against each other, with total destruction as the only acceptable answer.

Creating a character for these stories is truly not at all difficult. We have many established races available in our ever-growing Bestiary, and you can visit the Library of Elders for this encyclopedia of information, as well as instructions for filling out your own Character Scroll.

Here's the link!

Once your scroll is filled out, feel free to post it in the appropriate thread in the Character Scrolls forum (found within the Library of Elders, here:)
http://night.proboards4.com/index.cgi?board=profiles
(Heart's Rebirth characters would go into the Heart's Rebirth Scrolls thread, War Games characters into the War Games Scrolls thread, etc)

Yrindale and Myself will oversee all character development and story additions and reserve the right to advise you in areas that are detrimental. We maintain the mandate to keeping Knighthood a depository of sci-fi and fantasy stories that truly are original, and the best way to do this is setting and keeping a decent bar of quality and originality. In other words.... write well, use those grammar skills you were taught, be cohesive with the writing and story of those around and beside you, and forget what you know of everything from your favorite D&D game or book, Everquest, Lodoss, Warlands, or whatever you pull from.... Use your imagination, for without it, there is no fantasy.

Inspiration is awesome, but don't rip off characters or plots as it limits yourself and cheapens the experience for everyone. Balance your character's flaws with their strengths. Don't ideallize yourself with your character's... be real. Women characters aren't the only victims of Mary Sues, so be wary and wise. :)

Collaborating is essential for writing with many people. Feel free to team up with other writers or go solo for a while! But if you do find yourself working with a partner or in a group, here are some things to keep in mind...

Communicate to make sure you portray characters correctly and don't upset anyone's plans.

Read other people's posts. Know what's going on.

This isn't a competition. If you throw your character into a fight, you don't need to godmod or be a superman in the fight. You don't need to show off anything; there's nothing to compensate for. You'll only serve to cheapen your writing and the overall story if you do. Many many people frown on this, and many have tried... and loss their privileges to write, so I hope you won't fall prey to that. :)

Ask others how your writing is! See if your characters are interesting. Be open to advice or criticism if you ask for it!

Be Civil.
Upset? Can't work it out or don't want to confront? PM or IM a Guard.

Those under 17 years of age: ProBoards will only allow 18+ to join, please be advised.

Also! Don't use an AOL e-mail account to join up, Proboards won't send you your confirmation e-mail.

We highly urge you all to introduce yourselves, say hi, and ask questions if you have any. This is a pretty friendly place and we don't want anybody to feel lost at any time.

Thanks for reading and even more thanks to those who decide to add their own flavor to the Knighthood :)

Oh! And if you're someone who isn't a great author, but rather a great artist, don't shy away. Everyone's welcome here. Even if you just want to read and talk about the story, this is entirely acceptable as well!
